KwaZulu Natal

Arthurs Seat, Central Berg

Height above landing: 450 m
Height above sea level: 1570 m
Preferable wind direction: E-SE-S-SW
Directions: Take the N3 from DBN. After the Mooi-Toll-Plaza take the Loskop/Escourt North Turnoff, turn left to Central Berg. After Winterton Intersection, becomes dirt road. Turn left at Kelvin Grove sign. Turn right after campsite, follow road up mountain. 4x4's recommended.

Beacon Hill

Height above landing: 300 m
Height above sea level: 380 m
Preferable wind direction: SE-S-SW
Directions: From Durban, travel down N2 South. After Ultra City, take Sezela/Esperanza turn-off. Turn right over freeway. Turn left at Beacon Hill sign. Road becomes dirt road. Turn right at T-Junction. Go past bottle store. After 4 km look for track on left to take-off.

Bulwer, Southern Berg

Preferable wind direction: NE-E-SE

Directions: From Durban take the Howick / Underberg turnoff.
Go left towards Underberg, drive for 80kms, where you will reach Bulwer.

Bulwer Mountain is our main flying site in the area. It is flyable in North East, East and South East wind directions. The site affords all types of flying, from ridge soaring to thermalling and training to going cross-country. With a big grassy take-off and landing, this site is our favourite. The drive up the back of the mountain from the town takes 20 minutes. Road accessibility: Good

Other Paragliding sites in the Bulwer area:

Centocow
Faces South - 200m. This site is at the top of the Centocow Valley and provides great flying in thermic conditions as well as valley release. When the site works the possibilities for getting up and going cross country are excellent and it has been done many times. The take-off is relatively small but easy. Top landing is easy.

Pholela
Faces SW and W. 460m.

Lundies
Faces SW and SE. 500m. 7km ridge.

Pevensey
Faces SW. 200m.

Bulwer 600
N, E, NW, NE, SE. 200m.

Playground
40m high. In soaring conditions, this is where we play.

Sun City
Faces South, East and North. 260 – 360m high take-offs.

Dumbe Mountain, Paulpietersburg

Directions: Approx. 400km north of Dbn. Travel via Ladysmith, Dundee, Vryheid. 4x4 recommended for driving up mountain.

Ingomankulu

Height above landing: 275 m
Height above sea level: 1100 m
Preferable wind direction: NE-ENE-E-SE-S
Directions: Approx. 70km north of Dbn. Travel up the N3. Take the Camperdown glide-off (Exit 57) and turn left. Next intersection (T-junction) turn left again. Turn right at the "Ingomankulu" sign. Look for "Hope farm" on your right-hand-side. Drive to farmhouse and pay farmer for use of his land for the day: R15/person & R15/vehicle per day, to be paid to the farmer before going up the hill. 4x4 recommended for driving up mountain.

Monte Seel

Preferable wind direction: N-NE
Directions: Travel up Botha's Hill past Kearsney College. Look for launch-site on right, just before dirt road.

One Gum, Durban

Height above landing: 320 m
Height above sea level: 400 m
Preferable wind direction: NE-E-ESE
Directions: From Durban take the M13 towards Pietermartizburg. Take the "Pioneer Rd" glide off, turn right over freeway. Turn right at traffic circle, follow road to T-junction. Turn right, follow road for +- 7km, till you see sign "Hillview Gardens" on left hand side. Turn left, find parking lot on top of the hill.

Pateni, Richmond

Height above landing: 485 m
Height above sea level: 1145 m
Preferable wind direction: E-SE-S
Directions: Travel along Richmond Road (R56) Turn right onto the D59 [13km after the Richmond turnoff] (dirt road)
After 8kms turn right onto dirt track. Close gates behind you. Drive +- 6km to top of mountain. 4x4's Essential.

Rod's Cottage, Little Berg

Height above landing: 175 m
Height above sea level: 1450 m
Preferable wind direction: SE-E-NE
